Records relating to Eshott House, 1788-1839.

The records consist of plans for layout of new plantings of trees, detailed letters and accounts for orders of thousands of trees from at least five local suppliers along with manuscript catalogues of trees that they supplied, drawings of "clumps of trees" to show his intended layouts on his grounds, requests for wood and mason work for walks, etc. Adams has transcribed from the "British Critick Review" an article on garden design by Humphrey Repton "Observations on the theory and practice of landscape gardening," and records the advice of other experts Archibald Dickson. Includes correspondence with vendors: John Hindmarsh, John Crawford, James Russell, George Dunn, Matthew Mills, Trevelyan, 26 orders and receipts from Andrew Wilkie of Woller, Ms. catalogue of "Forest Trees" supplied from James Crozer of Alnwick, eight orders and receipts from James and George Knox. The records include seven notebooks which provide additional details of Thomas Adams's estate and the income generated from Eshott Colliery 1803-1808; production and sales; to whom in the neighborhood it was sold and how much was sold; details of the workforce used in the mine.
